This year at Jackson we have begun the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Bullying is defined as follows:
"Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself."
This is an ongoing program that strives to teach our students what bullying is and what they can do about it. The program focuses not only on the bully, but on the people being bullied, as well as bystanders. We have discussed these different roles and will continue to do so with classroom community meetings. Please encourage your child to talk to you about the program.
If you have any questions or concerns about the program, please feel free to contact me at school!

ATTENDANCE
Just a reminder that the last day of school this year is June 8th for students and it is a full day of school! All students should strive to be in school every day and on time. Each week the grade levels "compete" to see who has the highest percentage of students at school and on time. The "winning" grade level is announced throughout the week and that grade level gets our special Be Present flag, made by Mrs. Corson, hung out in the hallway by their classrooms. It is fun to see where the flag will be each week!
12 POWERFUL WORDS
12 Powerful Words are a list of words used in testing. It is important that you talk about these words with your child. Larry Bell, educational consultant, believes that all students can be achievers on standardized test if our students become familiar with these testing words.
- Trace – list in steps
- Analyze – break apart
- Infer – read between the lines
- Evaluate – judge
- Formulate – create
- Describe – tell all about
- Support – back up with details
- Explain – tell how
- Summarize – the short version
- Compare – all the ways they are alike
- Contrast – all the ways they are different
- Predict – what will happen next
Activities you can do at home
Make up questions using the words.
Use the words during the dinner meal.
Add the words to the front of the refrigerator. Review one word each morning.
Discuss the words as you drive to school or to another location.
Develop a "who wants to be a millionaire" type of fun game.
Review and discuss one of the twelve powerful words each evening before going to bed.
The link below will take you to the website that will provide more information on the 12 Powerful Words.

PENNS CAVE FIELD TRIP
The end of the year is quickly approaching! I wanted to remind everyone that we will be going on our field trip to Penn's Cave on Tuesday, June 7th. Please remember to send a jacket or sweatshirt with your child. The temperature in the cave is about 52 degrees year round!
Also, the students may bring up to $10.00 with them to spend in the gift shop if they wish but no money for the trip is required.
Your child already signed up to either pack their lunch or get a school bag lunch so be sure to ask them!
I am looking forward to a fun and exciting day!
